1. You Wash Your Hair Too Often
Clean hair is a necessity, but if you wash your hair every single day, you’re actually hurting it. Too much shampooing actually strips your hair of the natural oils within, and this can cause strands and follicles to become brittle. The ideal routine is to shampoo once or twice per week, if you can stand it.
2. You’re Too Stressed
Yes, when you stress and are indulged in drama, your hair suffers! Be it finances or romance woes, too much stress can cause your hair to thin and fall out. No, we can’t always control what happens. When life does occur, try your best to breathe through it and get through it. Because if you don’t, it will show on your crown!
3. You Wrap Your Hair Too Tight
When you’re wearing tight styled in your hair, you cause excessive damage to the strands and follicles. Yes, you want everything to be in place and on point, but tightening those ends and pulling them in is actually doing damage. Maybe you don’t always like your hair down or in your face. But just try not to pull it too much. If you change the shape of your eyes when you put your hair up, it’s too tight.
4. You Wear Headbands
Headbands are very fashionable. But honey, they are not your best friend. Shocking, we know. While they help to hide bad hair days, they also cause bad hair. Repetitive wear of headbands can cause breakage around the hairline, which will lead to receding hair. Be careful!
5. You Wash Your Hair Right Before Bedtime
If you wash your hair and go to bed, STOP! Sleeping on wet hair is dangerous. Your hair is actually its weakest when its wet so it has to be treated delicately. When you sleep on it immediately, that can cause you to pull it unnecessarily and strain the follicles. This also causes breakage and frizz. Take a few moments to dry it first.
6. You Eat the Wrong Food
If you are what you eat, this could be damaging to your hair. Eating foods that are not high in iron and protein can actually cause your hair to thin. With so many diets and eating styles, be sure that you’re getting the appropriate amounts of daily nutrients. Or consider taking supplements that can be purchased over the counter. But always consider talking to your doctor first!
7. You Rub Your Hair Instead of Blotting It
We’re not saying to dump your towel. But if you rub your wet hair deeply with a towel, you could actually be hurting it! Instead of rubbing it or wrapping it too much, simply blot wet areas. This can prevent breakage.
8. You Expose Your Hair to the Sun
Everyone loves a good beach day or an afternoon by the pool, but if you have bleached or highlighted hair, you can literally cause your hair to break and fall off! Salt from the oceans actually hardens your hair and creates a very hard film on it, and the chlorine water from the pool has several chemicals that can cause major damage, but to help this, add some argan oil to your hair before swimming. You can thank us later!
9. You Use Heat on Your Hair
To heat or not to heat? That is the question! And while blow-drying is popular and often deemed necessary, it actually damages the surface of your hair strands. However, you can air dry OR use a lower setting for the heat. Don’t over use heat, but don’t under use it either. Just be modest!
Some of the very things that we believe help us can actually hurt us. Just be sure that you’re not causing damage to your pride and joy!
